The feeling that comes with drinking alcohol can be great at first, but when the smokescreen has blown past and you realize that the great feeling is gone…you will be reaching out for another beer. This is when you can consider yourself addicted. But however difficult your addiction, you can rest assured that you can get over it by implementing some advice.

Change Your Friends

Unless if you haven’t noticed, alcohol consumption mostly occurs when a couple of friends are bunched together and are having a fabulous time. Very rarely do you come across people who drink alone but are, quite sadly, addicted. Changing friends is an effective remedy for an alcoholic who is trying to reduce consumption levels. You can do this in different ways, like: moving to a different neighborhood, or changing your working hours so that you do not have time to hang around with your drinking buddies. Alcoholic beverages are best consumed in groups. But if you drink alone you will find drinking boring and hence you will stop.

Skipping System

Another strategy you can use to reduce alcohol consumption is that of skipping a day until your next drinking session. Try to drink for a day and then skip the one after that. Do so for two weeks until you feel you can skip two days. Carry on until you reach such a time when you are skipping about 5 days before taking a drink. According to this format you will only be drinking on weekends, now wouldn’t that be a major accomplishment worth drinking to? But the important thing to remember with the skipping system is that compensation drinking does not work, i.e. when you drink heavily to compensate for days you did not drink. This is like taking one step forwards and two steps backwards.

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)

Attending alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings can be yet another helpful alternative for people trying to deal with alcoholism. AA meetings are a communication system which allows people with serious alcohol addiction issues to talk about their problems. The fear of opening up to friends and family has, in most cases, resulted in a worsening of drinking problems. It is easier to get over a problem when a person talks to people sharing a common dilemma.
